Whether you’re a beginning painter or an experienced artist, you want to do more than simply reproduce exactly what you see; you want to transform reality into a personal, expressive image. This course is designed to help you make the leap into more imaginative and creative painting.

We’ll do exercises, paint independently, look at slides of other works and discuss what makes a painting miss the mark, or what makes it successful.  You’ll learn more about how to make your paintings
more personal.  These workshops teach you how to be the best painter you can be.  You learn more about how to make your art personal and powerful.

We also have a lot of fun,  relaxed and at the same time, productive.

Whether you’re a beginning painter or an experienced artist, you want to do more than simply reproduce exactly what you see; you want to transform reality into a personal, expressive image. This course is designed to help you make the leap into more imaginative and creative painting. We will start with realistic images and then explore a variety of approaches in color and design to abstract the images.

The first day Schink will begin with a powerpoint lecture (explaining how artists from the present and past have abstracted reality) and will continue the day with a review of your recent work (5 original matted paintings or digital images of paintings on flash drive or disk). No painting on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, class will begin with a demonstration and students will experiment with a variety of ways to creatively abstract their work to make it more personally satisfying. The class will conclude with a brief critique of class work.

No Materials list. Bring your own watermedia supplies.

More about my workshops:

I try to make these workshops relaxed, fun, and at the same time, productive. I spend time with each student; I assess their work and we discuss their direction. My goal is to help each painter find a personally satisfying way to paint. We have a terrific time! We do exercises, paint independently, look at slides and discuss what makes a painting miss the mark, or what makes it successful.

You’ll learn more about how to make your paintings more personal.
My workshops teach you how to be the best painter you can be. You learn more about how to make your art personal and powerful.
We also have a lot of fun. After all, why paint, if it’s not fun, too?

I hope you can join me for a workshop! You may see familiar faces, and you’ll be in a class of like-minded artists who love to learn and explore.

My workshop schedule is constantly being added-to, so check back occasionally to learn more. My workshops tend to fill up pretty fast, so be sure to check early for availability.

Dear “Topher,” I very much would like to take a workshop from you if I can match the time and money with your offerings. However, I don’t care for figures and am not advanced enough for the Taos ones. Do you ever do just shape and color?

    Adrienne Blackhart

    • Topher didn’t get this because he’s so busy with his commitments that he’s not likely to spend time in WordPress.

HOWEVER having taken many workshops with him I can tell you that figure painting is rarely a mandatory workshop task – in fact, most of Toph’s workshops deal with shape and color. If you ever want to learn how to do killer shapes, Toph is the teacher for you! And his communication on color and design are equally outstanding. Definitely consider one of his workshops – you’ll be hooked! PS – His classes are so much fun, but you’ll also walk away having gained some great new perspective on the work you’re doing! – Editor CWL

  5. Has the ISS in Taos been discontinued for 2016? I would love to sign up, but the website is no longer working. I heard rumors that the workshop had ended. I am hoping that is not true. Thank you!

    • Hello Karen, Sad to say, we have decided to discontinue the ISS. We enjoyed this workshop very much but this allows for the teachers of the workshop to concentrate on other projects. Thanks for your interest.
